Still 30%? Already 30%? The rate of parental leave taken|まだ3割?もう3割?育児休暇の取得率

いいことじゃないですか!育児休暇を取った日本のサラリーパーソンたち(特に男性)が3割を越したという、とても朗らかな ニュースです。もっとも、他の先進国からの感覚では、まだそんだけかい!?と言われそうですけど。

ただ本来であれば、休暇取得よりも、育児インフラ支援や、子育てに対する世間の理解を進める方向に、もう少し加速して欲しいですけどね。そちらの方が、遥かに子育ては無理のない、豊かな体験になるでしょうから。

いずれは、ほぼ必ず職場復帰しなければいけないわけですから、その時にしっかりとした支援インフラがないと、結局は片親が退職するということになりかねません。超少子高齢化が驀進する今後の30年間、そんな余裕は日本にはありませんから。

Isn’t that a good thing? It is very good news that more than 30% of Japanese office workers, especially men, have taken parental leave. However, from the perspective of other developed countries, they may say, “Is that all?”

However, ideally, I would like to see more acceleration in the direction of supporting childcare infrastructure and promoting public understanding of child-rearing rather than individual parents taking their leave. It would make child-rearing a far richer and less overwhelming experience in Japan. It will create a brighter future.

At some point, those parents certainly have to return to work, and without a solid support infrastructure in place at that time, one of the parent may end up retiring. Japan cannot afford such a luxury in the next 30 years, when the ultra-low birthrate and aging population will rush forward with no break.
