This is a very interesting article, though a bit long. From “Harvard Magazine”.
More and more, recent scientific studies are showing that the negative physical damage caused by “social isolation.” It is ghastly.
It used to be thought that it was bad for our mental conditions, but physically, well, maybe a little. and so on. However, this consensus has completely collapsed now. In fact, in the U.S., the government has issued a major warnings.
The article says, “…last year, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy ’98 issued a formal advisory warning that social isolation increases the risk of premature death by 29 percent, calling it “as dangerous as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.” What the…!?
The fear of social isolation is that it increases the risk of premature death by about 30 percent. That is to say, it is as physically harmful as forcing a non-smoker to smoke 15 cigarettes a day. For the nation, this is no longer a marginal social welfare issue that we should consider if we can afford it. It is today an important issue that will affect the shape of the nation.
「last year, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy ’98 issued a formal advisory warning that social isolation increases risk of premature death by 29 percent, calling it “as dangerous as smoking 15 cigarettes a day.」
